V S Sunil Kumar and officers of Agricultural Department were present in the function. Around 40 cents of land will be utilised for the farming in the compound of Raj Bhavan. In his speech, the Governor said that everyone should start organic farming especially vegetables in their own simpler ways in whichever land available. Sri. Sunil Kumar said that the farming at Raj Bhavan will send out a big message to society uprising the minds towards organic farming.
Recently,in almost all days there are reports in television and news papers on organic farming, their good models and success stories. Almost all the ministers including the Chief Minister in the new L D F Ministry have started organic farming of vegetables in the compound of their official residences.Teams of youths, Kudumbasree units, non governmental agencies and even certain wings of political parties are aggressively coming forward to promote organic cultivation by starting it either in their own land or in lease basis in vacant lands which are lying useless for long time. Government through agriculture offices are giving technical and financial support to this venture. As a result, it is likely to get enough yields of vegetables for the use of Keralites even for the festival seasons, including the coming Onam.
Farming of vegetables in grow bags in the terrace of the buildings has become very common especially in the city areas. What happened to Keralites to try enthusiastically organic farming is a question of much interest...
In the past years, several instances had came out that the vegetables supplied to Kerala from other States are grown using poisonous pesticides which are harmful and likely to affect the health of people using it. This is the immediate provocation to people for coming forward towards farming in their own limited area. New techniques of farming using minimum land, terrace farming and success stories of such farming made a confidence among people that it is not hard to produce the vegetables for their daily use by themselves. The success stories in organic farming are getting wide publicity through medias. Hence people from all over the State, from cities to villages, are trying to experiment vegetable farming. There are various Government machinery to give support to those coming forward. If this tendency continue, within one or two years, Kerala will become self sufficient in the production of common vegetables required in the kitchens of Malayali households.
Kudumbasree and organic farming are the two Government initiatives which were wholeheartedly accepted by people as their own schemes. The enthusiasm of the people in the involvement of these schemes have resulted to rapid and basic changes and developments in all fields in the society especially social, economic and agricultural sectors. These can be termed as one of the success of peoples participation in the administration which was envisaged through the 42nd and 43rd amendments of the Constitution. No doubt, if Government implement projects seeking the participation of people, it will result to success models.
