A successful model for waste collection in Thiruvananthapuram city.

Solid waste disposal is one of the major problems facing in the present-day life.During the last two decades the life style of people, in all respects, has undergone radical changes.Plastic and electronic materials have become indispensable . Food habits and dress materials are also changed. One of the major disadvantage of the changing life style is the accumulation of large quantity of materials which are non-degradable . In olden days, nearly  20 years ago, we used only biodegradable things. Now disposal of electronic wastes, glass waste, plastic, medical waste, debris's of demolished buildings etc are emerging as serious environmental hazards. Our government and Local Self Government Institutions have not yet found out a proper and effective solution to solve these problems.

In Thiruvananthapuram Corporation area, there was a somewhat satisfactory system when Vilappilsala garbage plant was functioning along with the machinery of Kudumbasree,
but the corporation authorities have failed to maintain the plant Eco-friendly.and in good health atmosphere. Hence as a result of the agitation of the people of that locality, it was forced to shut down  plant. This resulted to an utter chaos in the waste management system in the City.Different types of alternate systems are experimenting, but not a systematic and Eco-friendly system has been established.

In the last few months, the Corporation put up a system for collecting different types of wastes by setting up collection points in particular locations. Sometimes, electronic wastes are collected and in other days, plastic wastes and old footwear were collected. There will be a  day for collection of glass wastes. People have to bring the particular waste to the notified to the collection points on the day. There will employees to collect them.

On 24th September the collection was of glass wastes and footwear. Notice was published two days ago in medias regarding the collection points. In 27th,they intend to  organise a collection drive for coconut husks and shells. In the collection drive held on 24th, o nearly 85 tonnes of waste were collected within 5 hours.Out of this, 60 tonnes were glass waste and the remaining old footwear. The waste collection is being organised as part of 'My City, Beautiful City 'project of the Corporation. There was long queue in front of the collection counter for handing over the waste.
The Residential Association of A K G Nagar, Peroorkada has stood up as model in this drive by collecting the wastes from all the residences in the area of the Association and sending it to the collection point by arranging  vehicle .This system was very beneficial to the residence as they are escaped form going to the collection points and waiting for their turn. The office bearers of other Associations can follow this model.

We can admire the Corporation authorities for evolving this new system which is found very fuitful and beneficial to the peaople in the City.
